At the root of holistic health is accessible, fresh food.
The Health Care Share (HCS) connects Vermont families with fresh, local food through their health care provider.
Health care providers at 11 partnering medical centers identify patient families experiencing food insecurity, diet-related disease, or other distinct health risks and provide a referral to the program to provide fresh, local produce so patient families can access a more nutritious diet.
Each week, participating families pick up a bag full of freshly harvested, certified organic produce at their health care provider’s office. Shares sometimes have local products like cheese or flour. Each share comes with a handcrafted newsletter with information on the week’s contents and recipes. The program lasts between 12 and 17 weeks, depending on the partner.
Participating in the Health Care Share supports paid jobs and significant learning for youth and young adults.
There is no cost to participate. The program is funded by medical centers, farm stand sales, sponsoring businesses, philanthropy, and other VYCC revenues.
The Health Care Share is entering its tenth season in 2022! The program begins in early July. Interested in registering? Check our list of participating providers below.
